Power Supplies at risk - Nuclear Reactors Closed
The UK has 16 nuclear reactors supplying 18% of the UK's electricity. Seven are still out of action due to breakdowns and maintenance. Michael Meacher, former Environment Minister, said it was 'extremely worrying that one of the major sources of electricity is half-down at this time.' 'I think it's pretty worrying that they themselves have such a major problem as a result of continuing breakdowns , repair and maintenance. One needs power certainty, and the nuclear industry doesn't provide it.' At Torness both units are closed for repairs to electricity supplies. One of two units at Dungeness B is out for standard refuelling. At Hartlepool one reactor is out for statutory maintenance and the other is closed following problems with boiler closure units. One unit is down for refuelling at Heysham, and the other is closed for safety checks. Prof Ian Fells, a nuclear expert and an advisor to the World Energy Council, said that he blamed a lack of investment for the outages, and warned that the consequences could be serious . He said, 'It is disturbing. I mean, we're going to have to rely on it being a warm winter. If it isn't, maybe we will run into power cuts. And the consequential loss of that is not just the loss of electricity; it's the loss to industry when everything fails. It's really quite serious matter.' Another winter and yet more warnings of imminent power outages. For further information regarding our range of uninterruptible power supplies, such as diesel generators please visit our website.
